As food photographers and business owners, we've all had our fair share of surprises and curveballs. So, here are three lessons every creative business owner needs to know to push through the tough times and thrive in their entrepreneurial journey without giving up.

1. Discipline Trumps Talent

Talent and photography skills bring initial clients. They are essential to get started. Gradually, the word gets around & work begins to pick up. However, talent alone doesn't guarantee growth or success. The real game-changer is discipline.

Success isn't about being the best food photographer; it's about showing up every day, creating consistently, and taking intentional actions. The most amazing photographers might not have thriving businesses, while those with disciplined routines often do.

It's the daily commitment to your craft and business that sets you apart. Talent gets you started, but discipline keeps you going and growing.

2. Continuous Learning Beyond Photography

One of the biggest lessons is that growth requires continuous learning, not just in photography but also in business and life skills. As much as we invest in learning photography, we need to be prepared to learn as much about business strategies, time management, and mindset. They’re also important rather than only focussing on upgrading photography techniques.

Not all learning needs to be directly correlated to photography. Often we need to learn life and mindset skills that indirectly help us grow in this creative path. The lesson is that not all investments we make as food photographers will be about photography; it will depend on what is needed to sustain the business in the long run. Remember, learning isn't confined to your craft; it extends to life and business skills.

3. Transition from Freelancer to Business Owner

There needs to be a realisation and decision on whether we are freelancers or business owners. The way they both function and approach their entrepreneurial journey is very different.

Freelancers move from project to project, earning cash quickly. Business owners, however, have a long-term vision and strategy for growth. They pursue the jobs they want and have various business segments like email lists, podcasts, and resources for community engagement and business growth. They also hire teams to handle different aspects, like podcast production, to focus on the bigger picture.

As business owners, we need a vision for the future, focusing on strategic growth rather than just the immediate tasks. This shift in mindset can transform our approach, allow us to scale our business, and create a sustainable, ambitious career. Neither decision is right or wrong. We need to decide who we are and adopt the path that best supports that decision.

Conclusion

These three lessons can be pivotal in our journey as food photographers and business owners. Embracing discipline, continuous learning, and a business-oriented mindset can help us grow our businesses and maintain our passion. I wish I had known these truths earlier, but discovering them along the way has been invaluable.

If you're navigating similar paths, I hope these insights prepare you for success and inspire you to embrace your journey with a clear vision and unwavering discipline. Remember, it's not just about the talent; it's about the dedication and mindset you bring to your creative career.
